Bad luck strikes Willemse Jnr in Tour of Libya

A cracked spine has ruled South African cyclist Chris Willemse Jnr (Team CSC/Marcello) out of the Tour of Libya.

Willemse Jnr - who competed in the leading sprinter’s red jersey in Wednesday’s 120km fourth stage – was injured after falling in the final sprint to the finish line. Six riders, including Willemse and fellow South African Shaun Davel, were involved in a crash. Four of the riders have subsequently withdrawn from the Tour.

Meanwhile Team CSC/Marcello’s Duncan Viljoen finished in third and Jonathan Kinnear in fifth place in Stage 5, a 20 km time-trial. Viljoen’s top three placing comes as a welcome surprise after last week’s announcement of his intention to withdraw from the Tour due to ill health.

The South African cyclists are hoping for a good result in today’s 130km penultimate stage.

The 860km Tour of Libya finishes on Friday, 23 March.
