Team CSC/Marcello trio to compete in SA Champs

A determined Team CSC/Marcello trio will be in action at the SA Track Championships which will be held later this week, from April 26 to 28, 2007, in Gauteng.

According to team manager Chris Willemse Snr, “When it comes to track cycling, few of South Africa’s top national cycling teams can boast as many successes as can Team CSC/Marcello.” Willemse Snr believes his team is capable of once again walking away with a number of national medals even though Chris Willemse Jnr, one of its strongest riders and a former National Champion in a number of track events, will not be competing in the 2007 SA Champs as a result of a back injury.

Instead it will be left to Garth Thomas, Travys Wilkins and Jeremy Maartens to fly the Team CSC/Marcello flag, with Thomas – who came seventh in Sunday’s Tour of Durban - partnering Exel rider and Tour of Durban second place winner, Nolan Hoffman, for the Madison.

Last year Thomas and Willemse Jnr were crowned SA Madison Champions and Willemse Snr is confident of Thomas’s chances to retain the title with the talented Hoffman as his partner. “There is no doubt the Thomas-Hoffman duo will be a favourite to win the Madison,” Willemse Snr said.

CSC/Marcello’s Thomas and Wilkins will also compete in the Points, 1500m and Elimination events while Jeremy Maartens is expected to deliver strong performances in the 4000m Pursuit, the Elimination, Points and Madison.
