News Release-- February 15, 2007
Cape riders chosen to compete in international track event
CSC/Marcello's Chris Willemse Jnr (left) and Garth Thomas (right) have been selected for the SA national team to compete in an international track event on March 9, 2007.
Team CSC/Marcello’s Garth Thomas and Chris Willemse Jnr were selected after winning the Madison at the national track event which took place this past weekend (10-11 February) at the Bellville Velodrome near Cape Town.
Thomas also won the Elimination Race while Willemse Jnr took line honours in the 15km Points race. The other Capetonian in the national squad is Morne Blignaut, who won the 1500 metre race on the weekend.
Joining the three Capetonians in the national squad for the March international are Mike Thompson and Gary Rabie from Gauteng and Kwazulu Natal’s Dean Edwards.
According to Team CSC/Marcello manager, Chris Willemse Snr, “The newly selected national team will compete against teams from Germany, Khazakstan and an invitation team that includes former world champions Franco Marvulli and Bruno Risi.”
Thomas and Willemse, the current South African Madison Champions, are delighted to have been selected for the March 9 event.
“It’s always an honour to be selected for the national squad, even though our participation in the track event has ruled us out of the Giro del Capo and Cape Argus Pick ’n Pay Cycle Tour,” they said.
The South African selectors have also indicated the six riders will be short-listed for the national team to compete in the forthcoming B World Track Championship event, a qualifier for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.
