BAE Systems is an international company that develops, delivers and supports advanced defence and aerospace systems for air, land at sea and in space. With a 40,000-strong workforce across more than 70 locations, many users transition regularly between sites. It is essential for the company to provide users with consistent service delivery, instant connectivity and full integration with key enterprise services.
Business and user communities were increasingly frustrated by the inflexible IT infrastructure that had developed. With numerous fragmented networks, a plethora of desktop technologies and a huge portfolio of applications, it had become almost impossible to ensure the consistency of software and service delivery to users.
Improved services, less risk
BAE Systems’ goal was to transform end-user services and centralise service delivery and support, while making the deployment of services simpler. They also wanted to minimise the risk of business disruption, creating a platform for continuous service improvement that would meet a wide variety of different user needs and business models, across all locations.
The company embarked on a major IT programme that delivered business benefits such as the ability to deploy IT services quickly and efficiently to all users, reduced support costs, and a standardised platform. The system would also provide better security, remote management and improved service reliability.
Using myWorkstyle – CSC’s unique role-based managed desktop service – a standardised desktop operating system was defined. BAE Systems created two primary profiles to meet the varied needs of its end-user and business communities and can tailor these to meet changing end-user needs.
End-user benefits
Users can now connect to key services and email from any location and access a variety of new collaborative working services, including an online meeting service. Enterprise-wide file management makes it easier to share information across the business, while a new automated self-service file-restoration facility ensures users can get up and running again without delay.
The new managed desktop service makes it easy to align end-user services to business strategies and has delivered the following benefits:
- An enterprise-wide platform enables hosting and delivery of the latest IT services;
- Rationalised and standardised end-user technology has generated desktop cost of ownership savings;
- Automation of software updates has eradicated security issues, reduced downtime and increased employee productivity.
