CSC establishes first centre of excellence for civil nuclear industry

CSC has established a Centre of Excellence at Westlakes Science & Technology Park in Cumbria to service the civil nuclear industry.

CSC is the largest provider of IT services to the UK civil nuclear industry.  The Centre of Excellence focuses on delivering a specific set of IT capabilities, based on leading-edge technologies, that support CSC’s innovative solutions for civil nuclear clients.

Amongst the services provided by the CSC team at Westlakes is an IT help desk service for around 30,000 people who work at Sellafield; the Low Level Waste Depository near Drigg; Magnox North, who have five sites along the west coast of the UK; Magnox South, who have five sites across the south of England; and the National Nuclear Labs who operate at six locations across the UK. Westlakes also supports Springfields Fuels near Preston. This was the first plant in the world to make nuclear fuel and to date has produced several million fuel elements and provided products and services for over 140 reactors in more than 12 countries.

The team also support other utility companies including Anglian Water, one of the leading providers of water and wastewater services in the UK.  The help desk service records and progresses all calls for technology assistance from people who use a computer to do their job.   The site gets around 200,000 calls a year and has one of the highest levels of successful and timely repair rates in the UK.

CSC has further staff employed in the West Cumbria area who utilise their skills and experience to support various nuclear industry technology applications, including those that help manage nuclear materials accounting and keep track of nuclear waste.
