Cloud Computing: An Audience With Michael Capellas

A range of distinguished guests recently met for a Masterclass with a man who, more than most, has actually made technology history over the past 30 years. There were CSC clients from a range sectors including manufacturing, healthcare and transport together with experts on Cloud technology and security issues from CSC and several of its key partners. The discussion leader was Michael Capellas, whose CV reads like a history of technology leadership.
Most recently, Michael was Chairman and CEO of First Data Corporation, a global leader in electronic commerce and payment processing. Prior to that, he served as MCI's president and CEO and oversaw its successful rebuilding and transformation from a long distance carrier to the leading IP networks company.
Earlier still, he was a key player in bringing about the merger of Compaq and HP. At Compaq he was successively CIO, COO and then CEO, ending up as President of the merged HP. Prior to Compaq, he spent 20 years in technology positions for Oracle, SAP and Schlumberger. Today he also serves as a senior advisor to Kohlberg Kravis & Roberts (KKR) and First Data, and is also on the board of Cisco Systems, Inc.
Finally, and perhaps of most immediate relevance to this debate, Michael was appointed Chairman and CEO of VCE, the Cisco-EMC joint venture with investment from Intel and VMware earlier in 2010. The company was formed in 2009 to bring together industry-leading IT infrastructure. In August 2010, CSC announced that VCE architecture will be our default platform for Cloud-based deployments. There could be no better guide, therefore, to the sometimes mysterious but always exciting world of that disruptive technology we call the Cloud.
