CSC asset management expert Denis Pelych discusses how digital technology is transforming the industry. Organisations today aspire towards an efficient combined operational and capital expenditure approach to asset management, however, in reality the majority of assets are still managed on a time basis and the condition is often not known. Furthermore many assets are ‘stranded’ meaning that there is no way to digitally communicate with them from remote locations. - Asset operator inputs and the resulting performance outputs (e.g. acceleration, speed, power or flow, capacity, quality) will vary depending upon the environmental conditions and how the asset condition changes over time
- Total asset optimisation is not possible without a full understanding of how the asset is being operated, the environmental conditions that it is being operated within and how the asset’s condition is changing over time
- Historical data alone cannot provide the answer – a combination of real time analytics and historical “big data” analytics of SCADA sensor data is required to provide the new valuable insights that will drive asset optimisation decisions.
