History

We’re proud of our scale and achievements in the UK. CSC in the UK was founded in 1967 to support large government defence contracts. Since then, and in particular over the last 25 years, CSC in the UK has grown through exceptional organic growth and a number of key strategic acquisitions. We now have 7,600 staff located across 100 sites in the UK and Ireland.

Our Highlights

  • In 1988 we acquired the Index Group, a leading US consultancy with a base in the UK and three years later another London-based IT consultancy Butler Cox, giving the UK a strong base in strategic and IT consulting.
  • 1993 saw us win our first outsourcing deal — a £120m,11-year contract with high street retailer Bhs, closely followed in 1994 by what was then the largest outsourcing contract ever, from BAE Systems (formerly British Aerospace) — £134m over 10 years. These were followed by many other outsourcing deals across all industries, including contracts with Autoglass and Anglian Water Group.
  • By the late 1990s global CSC deals started to impact the UK division, with JPMorgan joining the list of clients. This was quickly followed by new partnerships with DuPont and US giant General Electric.
  • 2000 saw us acquire IT Services Ltd., a subsidiary of British Nuclear Fuels. As part of the agreement BNFL signed a five-year outsourcing contract with CSC, which has since been extended.
  • In the first half of this decade we won new outsourcing business that included Schroders, Zurich Financial Services, National Grid, as well as Royal Mail. Royal Mail was one of our largest outsource deals, with 1,500 staff joining us in the UK.
  • We also signed a contract with the National Health Service (NHS) in the West Midlands and North West of England, as part of its national programme to improve healthcare service for patients.
  • In 2005 we signed contracts with companies including Sun Microsystems, Allianz Cornhill and Anglian Water Group.
  • In 2006 we were awarded an additional contract with the NHS as part of the National Programme for IT to improve healthcare services for patients in the North East and East of England.
  • New business for CSC in 2007 included a business process outsourcing contract with the UK Borders Agency, an IT outsourcing contract with Urenco — a leading supplier of enriched uranium to nuclear power utilities worldwide — and extensions to existing Network Rail, BHP Billiton and Department of Health contracts.
  • In 2008 we started working for Virgin Atlantic Airways, re-signed a new seven-year contract with Bombardier Transportation and signed a further contract with Urenco.
  • In 2009 we won IT outsourcing contracts with five UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) companies and the Civil Nuclear Police Authority (CNPA) as well as winning a 10-year managed IT services contract to upgrade the Identity and Passport Service application and enrolment system. We also signed a landmark deal to implement Microsoft BPOS at Royal Mail: the first enterprise-scale project of its kind anywhere in the world.
  • As well as many new business wins, amongst our achievements in 2010 we were proud to have won the first ever 'Most Collaborative Firm' award presented by the Management Consultancies’ Association (MCA); as well as being invited to join the FTSE4Good list — one of only two US owned companies added to the list.
  • So far in 2011 CSC have been awarded a number of new IT outsourcing contracts including an Infrastructure Managed Services Agreement in Europe with ArcelorMittal. Our work with Orange (France Telecom) has resulted in us being awarded the European Outsourcing Association's Best Practice Award for Corporate Social Responsibility. We helped Orange to create and implement Eco Orange, an inventive and ambitious programme for collecting and recyling mobile phones and other devices, that is not just self-funding but profitable. We have also achieved silver ranking from the UK's Business in the Community 8th Corporate Responsibility Index.
