According to a representative customer survey conducted by TNS Infratest, Dresden Public Transit (Dresdner Verkehrbetriebe - DVB) is ranked No. 1 in Germany. By European standards, DVB operates a state-of-the-art customer-oriented local public transportation system. German municipalities and citizens alike take great pride in their public transportation networks. Dresden Public Public Transit Company is a prime example of a well-run, efficient operation. Of which its President and COO, Hans-Jürgen Credé is very proud.
“We are one of the most important mobility service providers in the Dresdeden metropolitan region. We consider ourselves to be more than merely an operator, but rather, a full-service system provider for public transport,” Credé says.
DVB carries more than 152 million passengers per year, i.e. more than 500,000 passengers per day. Traffic management is a core function in running a city, according to Credé.
“The efficiency and customer-orientation of public transport critically depends on the IT back-end systems. That's why our demands of their reliability are extremely high.” When DVB decided to thoroughly upgrade its operations control system, it quickly selected CSC as its IT provider.
Industry-specific Software Solutions are CSC's Core Competency

In recognition of the globally growing significance of local public transport, CSC developed the CP RBL solution, for which it provides the software, consulting services and IT operating system. CP RBL is a core application of modular design, from which customer-specific enterprise solutions are developed. The solution's openness and portability enable interoperability with system components from various vendors, such as on-board computers and passenger information systems. Its modular design and comprehensive interface capability form the basis for integration into the existing IT system environments of public transport carriers.
Putting the focus on passengers
DVB had a computer-aided operations control system since 1999, the comprehensive modernization of which encompassed, in addition to the central control center software, components such as digital radio, station displays and vehicle on-board computers.
In all aspects of the modernization, DVB attached greatest importance to putting the the passenger first: Providing the passenger with a variety of options to access real-time information, an overview of alternative connections and modes of travel and, most importantly, reliably punctual operations.
“It is our first and foremost goal to offer our passengers reliable connections and information,” explains Credé. “To do so, we needed a partner who not only had recognized IT expertise but also deep knowledge about the operational challenges of a transport company as well as profound understanding of our specific requirements.” Working closely together, CSC and DVB developed and implemented a modern traffic management system that includes a state-of-the-art control center and a new data and voice radio infrastructure. Never before has DVB used such a high degree of digitalization and latest technology.
Next level of innovation is underway
DVB has begun displaying in its buses and trams real-time transfer information for the next station. The data is provided by DVB’s RBL system.
Furthermore, a project for collaborative traffic management, enabling the city of Dresden's road traffic management and the DVB’s RBL to communicate with each other, is another contribution to improvement of traffic conditions in metropolitan areas. In this project, traffic lights are controlled based on the actual schedule situation of buses and trams. If the vehicle is delayed, it is prioritized with green lights. If it is early, the driver is advised to go more slowly while individual traffic is favoured with longer green phases.
