Product Lifecycle Management

Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is an enterprise set of inter-related processes and applications that maintain complete knowledge of a company’s product assets over time. Product knowledge includes elements that span the products lineage from ideation through support and disposal. PLM is not any single application or a one size fits all approach. PLM can and will have a different make up for each company depending on characteristics such as the:

  • Industry Vertical: A&D, Industrial, Consumer Product, Life Science, Auto, AEC and/or High Technology

  • Market Facing Model: Product Leader, Operationally Excellent, or Customer Intimate

  • Operating Model: e.g, Make-to-Order, Make-to Stock, Assemble-to-Order
  • Configure-to-Order, Engineer-to-Order, etc.

  • Supply Chain Network Model

  • Design Chain Network Model

  • Geographical Footprint

Product Lifecycle Management, when implemented with the company’s characteristics in balance, will result in significant competitive advantage. This increase in competitive advantage will come from several channels of opportunity. The company will increase its innovation capabilities, be a leaner organization having added agility and flexibility through its global supply chain network, and increase multi-company collaboration through better configuration and change management processes. The key tenets of the CSC PLM Practice and approach to our clients are: innovation, collaboration, global reach, and security of intellectual property. CSC has an industry leading PLM capability built around senior PLM professionals with broad and deep industry experience.

Operational Model

CSC’s proven approach to PLM is based on business value aligned with the measures that guide the company through the Executive Dashboard. PLM is at the same scale as a company’s ERP and must be held to the same kinds of enterprise metrics and kpi’s. Key elements of our business-based approach are:

  • Identifying the areas of highest value to the company: CSC’s has proven methodology from PLM Planning through Delivery and Support. It is a three-phased approach designed to identify and quantify the highest areas of business value for PLM achievement.

  • Built off a case for action: Collaboratively, CSC creates a well-defined, business-based value proposition that looks enterprise-wide to leverage the single source of product knowledge.

  • Scaled to match needs: PLM is not a one size fits all deal. As described earlier, a company's characteristics will provide the basis for establishing a right-sized and tailored approach. CSC utilizes an open and collaborative method for working with our clients to discover “what makes sense” for their specific situation.
