Vulcan Materials is the largest construction aggregates company in America. Most of its 8,000 employees work in stone quarries with heavy machinery — a work environment that would pose major challenges to any risk management program. “We manage safety and claims very prudently,” said Becky Chilcoat, Supervisor of Corporate Risk at Vulcan Materials. “We’re self-insured and self-administered for both workers’ comp and liability.”

Building on a Long-Term Relationship
Vulcan replaced its manual claims management process with DOS-based RISKMASTER software in 1991. Both Vulcan Materials and RISKMASTER have since experienced metamorphic changes. Vulcan has tripled in size and moved to Web-based RISKMASTER X.

As Vulcan Materials grew, users discovered more ways to benefit from RISKMASTER’s features and functions. For example, the safety department used the improved reports to analyze operations across the company and implement targeted safety programs for specific locations. As a result, claims began to decrease.

“With the information in our reports, we’ve been able to show our underwriters that Vulcan very carefully and effectively manages the risks associated with mining,” Chilcoat said. “In a very detailed manner we’ve been able to show them that our losses do not compare to most in the industry. Therefore, we’ve gotten very good underwriting and premiums. RISKMASTER has helped us reduce losses and document the reductions in detail to get better insurance premiums.”

Teaming Up with CSC
“In the last few years, we’ve been working more closely with CSC and the other RISKMASTER users, particularly because of CSC Connect and some of the regional user group meetings,” Chilcoat said. “We have really come to feel that we are all working together rather than battling with a software vendor, going back and forth to get what we want within the constraints of what can be provided. We work together and get things accomplished, for Vulcan as well as CSC.”
