Sisters of Mercy Health System provides shared services to 18 acute care hospitals, a heart hospital, outpatient care facilities, physician practices, clinics, skilled nursing and long-term residential care facilities in eight states. To manage claims, including 3,000 workers’ compensation and professional liability cases annually, the organization needed a flexible system.
Organization Uses Internet to Distribute Information
In 1999, after a nine-month search, Sisters of Mercy chose CSC’s RISKMASTER solution. More than 40 users, including risk managers in each region, enter claims information into the system, which serves as a central database for the corporation.
“RISKMASTER made it a lot easier to capture the information we need to capture,” said Carolyn Thornhill, director of Workers’ Compensation, Sisters of Mercy. “In many healthcare organizations, information can be fragmented. We’re able to collect information for risk management, workers’ compensation, professional liability, safety, quality and materials management. A lot of different departments are interested in what we can capture and what we can get out of the system.”
System Offers Web Access to Risk Management Data
To improve support to the organization’s multiple regions, Sisters of Mercy used RISKMASTER’s Internet capabilities in 2003 to deploy the system in the field to 18 risk managers, who now submit reports and access risk management data electronically. Sisters of Mercy rolled out Web-based services to workers’ compensation associates in 2005.
“It was a very easy rollout to the risk managers, and the reporting has become a lot faster over the Internet,” Thornhill said. “It’s helping them share information, get access to reports and stay on top of loss trends. We are looking forward to having the same services for workers’ compensation.”
RISKMASTER Community Provides Opportunity for Interaction
Sisters of Mercy works with CSC on the ongoing enhancement of the system through the RISKMASTER Users’ Group and RISKMASTER Advisory Council. Thornhill, who serves on the advisory council, said she enjoys the opportunity to interact with CSC’s staff and other software users.
“These meetings give the RISKMASTER community the opportunity to learn about new developments such as the Business Intelligence tool,” Thornhill said. “And it’s a great opportunity to see what other users are doing with the software. That is one of the real benefits of meeting with so many users.”
