In 2000, the Snohomish County Public Utility District (PUD) was increasing demands on its risk management database software. Unfortunately, due to multiple databases and compatibility issues, the system was becoming difficult to use. The data needed to be consolidated on a modern platform.
Easy Access to Property Damage, Liability, Workers’ Compensation Data
The Washington-based utility, located north of Seattle, was experiencing a variety of basic problems with using and maintaining its system. The data was in at least four different databases, which made it difficult to share information or create meaningful reports for management, even with the help of outside consultants.
After an exhaustive search, the utility licensed CSC’s RISKMASTER software and went into production in January 2003, consolidating its property damage, liability and workers’ compensation data.
Automated Diary, Payment Tracking
The utility uses RISKMASTER to track and administer workers’ compensation claims. The utility also uses the software to manage the negotiations, settlements and payments for liability claims and collect money for property damage resulting from accidents.
The utility can now track property damage payments with RISKMASTER’s automated diary, which serves the same purpose as a billing system, notifying claims personnel when a payment is late. RISKMASTER’s mail merge feature can then generate a reminder letter.
Improved Filing, Reporting Features
In addition to generating correspondence, RISKMASTER saves letters as an attachment to the electronic claim file. While the risk management team still keeps paper files, access to digital information has greatly improved customer service.
“RISKMASTER allows us to create much more detailed reports and be more selective about the information that’s analyzed,” said Jim Walker, Snohomish County PUD’s information systems architect. “Management is getting a much clearer picture of the workers’ compensation environment.”
