Minor mishaps are everyday occurrences at fast-food restaurants. Individually, they don’t amount to large claims, but for a company the size of Wendy’s International Inc., the exposure to low-severity, high-frequency risks presents an opportunity for savings.

Ordering up a More Customizable System
The $9.4 billion restaurant chain tried outsourcing its risk management information system but achieved greater savings by bringing it in house. To react quickly to claims at 1,500 Wendy’s, Baja Fresh and Tim Horton’s stores in North America, the company needed easily-customizable software. In 2001, Wendy’s installed CSC’s RISKMASTER.

“Loss control to us is huge, and frankly, that’s the value of computer systems,” said Wendy’s Joe Kovalcik, vice president of risk management.


Fast Service
RISKMASTER helps Wendy’s handle 15,000 to 16,000 reports annually — a job that would be impossible without RISKMASTER’s scripting capabilities, which allow automated responses to the wide variety of claims.

Once a claim is entered, RISKMASTER directs it to the right office and specifies an appropriate action — from contacting the claimant to sending a check. A check request can be generated automatically and forwarded to accounts payable. RISKMASTER also interfaces with Wendy’s payroll system.


Internet-Based Reporting
In addition to driving down costs, RISKMASTER helps Wendy’s live up to its reputation for quality customer service. RISKMASTER also supports Wendy’s strategies for continued growth. The company plans to provide incident-reporting capabilities over the Internet for each of its stores. Under the company’s Web strategy, store managers won’t enter information directly into RISKMASTER but will provide basic information to risk management personnel that will speed up the entire process.
