Starbucks has approximately 6,000 stores globally and sells 20 million cups of coffee a week. Add to these figures 60,000 employees and an expansion rate of about four new stores a day, and the company’s rising risk exposure becomes evident.

Coffeehouse Blends Growth and Technology
"Starbucks has on average about 300 claims a month," said Anthony Spacciante, RMIS Administrator for Starbucks, "and it's growing incrementally." Starbucks needed a risk management system that could keep up.

"RISKMASTER is the hub of our risk management department," said Erwin Mallernee, Starbucks’ Risk Manager. "Everything we do is supported by RISKMASTER. It allows us to be the keeper of the information — rather than giving it to a third party or an insurance company."

Reporting Tool Helps Filter More Data
Spacciante works closely with the data every day, creating customized reports for the company’s safety analysts and risk financing department. He also sets up standard reports that individuals can run themselves.

Spacciante cites the reporting tool as being the most important tool that RISKMASTER offers and the reason that Starbucks chose the system. The reporting tool gives Starbucks the power to pull any report in any customized way that it needs.

RISKMASTER Provides a Robust System for the Future
In the future, Starbucks plans to give all of its stores access to the Starbucks network. Then the stores will be able to report incidents online, directly into RISKMASTER, eliminating the need to file paper reports.
