Smart Business December 2011 - UK Edition
Welcome to the December issue of Smart Business, CSC's UK newsletter. As usual we're bringing you the latest examples of how we've been solving issues faced by companies in every sector.
Highlights this month include a look at the growing trend of employees utilising their own devices for business purposes. Elsewhere, we evaluate known presence technology and review how an NHS trust is making unified EPR a reality.
We always welcome feedback so please let us know if there's anything that's caught your interest in this issue. And if you're on Twitter do come and join us there too.

The device is right
Today's generation of workers increasingly expects to be able to do business using whatever device they prefer. In many cases the computers they have at home will be much more powerful than what is on the desk in the office. CSC's Liz Benison looks at the growing trend of employees utilising their own devices for business purposes.

Healthy progress
The journey towards a national Electronic Patient Record has taken longer than originally expected and has sometimes proved testing for those involved. Quietly and effectively, a group of early adopter NHS Trusts have been making the vision of a unified EPR a reality, including University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. Read their case study here.

Perfect Partner
CSC's new CTO Marc Silvester knows only too well how the changing role of CTO can be challenging. However, those who can find the right IT partner to help deliver on company goals will become 'heroes of the board room', he predicts. The key is to shape IT projects around business outcomes and not the other way round.

Present and correct
Known presence links what you know about customers or prospects to where they are so you can turn lookers in to bookers, explains Rick Tomredle, Chief Technologist at CSC's Logistics Centre of Excellence. Retail is driving the trend but other sectors will soon start to take advantage of the technology, he believes.

The wheel deal
Marussia Virgin Racing is using a video camera recording system delivered by CSC this season to record pit stops to ensure its engineers consistently work together to the best of their abilities. The training aid is already improving pit stop performance, saving valuable time and improving track position.

CSC welcomes inclusion in “Leaders” Quadrants
CSC has been positioned in the “Leaders” quadrant of two Gartner reports, “Magic Quadrant for Help Desk Outsourcing, Europe” and “Magic Quadrant for Desktop Outsourcing, Europe”. This follows on from news earlier this year that CSC had been positioned in the “Leaders” quadrant of the Gartner report “Magic Quadrant for Data Center Outsourcing and Infrastructure Utility Services, Europe.
