Virginia Beach Controls its Destiny with RISKMASTER

From Mainframe to Micro

The city formed a loss-control committee, but identifying ways to control costs was frustrating. The city’s risk management data was on a mainframe, making it difficult to create customized reports for different departments.

"We faced difficulties such as being able to generate the reports divisions and departments needed," said Dennis Graul, risk management analyst. "We wanted a microcomputer-based application rather than a mainframe application. We wanted to convert historical data into a new database."

Why did Virginia Beach choose RISKMASTER? Graul says a major reason was the SORTMASTER tool.

"We liked the ease with which you could develop ad hoc reports," he said. "We weren't able to do that in our old application without getting a programmer to write the code. SORTMASTER eliminated that problem. With SORTMASTER's ease of use, I've been able to develop reports for loss control, providing city departments with their loss information."
