Trucking Firm Boosts Reporting, Safety with RISKMASTER

One of the industry’s largest transportation firms manages thousands of trucks and trailers on the road throughout the United States.
All that activity generates substantial risk and claims activity, but the company’s in-house system made it difficult to get timely, specialized reports of what was happening on the road and at the loading docks.
The firm had previously used a third-party administrator before bringing its claims handling in-house, realizing the need to improve overall operational safety and efficiency in an increasingly complex legal and regulatory environment. So the company began looking for ways to accelerate reporting and improve the ability to analyze all that information.
To address these concerns, the company licensed CSC’s RISKMASTER software for risk and claims management and Legal Solutions Suite to help manage outside legal matters.
‘A Much Clearer Picture of Our Business’
RISKMASTER helps the company manage property damage, general liability and workers’ compensation claims. Expanded reporting and business intelligence functions also are being added to the mix – yielding greater ability to understand what happened and where it happened in the company’s sprawling business.
“We already have a much clearer picture of our business and our problem areas, where we have exposures and where we can improve with training for our drivers and working with our customers,” according to the company’s vice president of Risk Management.
The trucking business is heavily deadline driven, and that includes claims reporting. “We need updated information that allows our business unit managers and our business owners to understand when accidents happen and what caused them to happen,” he said.
Progress has been substantial in that regard, he said. The company hoped for monthly reporting when the software was deployed but already has achieved daily reporting in some of its business units.
“Ultimately, we would like to have absolute real-time reporting as a result of this ongoing, evolving system that we work on every day in an effort to improve its timeliness,” he added. “I anticipate we will accomplish that.”
Improving Decision Making
The ability to correlate data with incidents tracked by RISKMASTER also is proving valuable. For instance, the company can correlate claims information in RISKMASTER with reports from the National Weather Service and interviews with drivers about road conditions to help identify storm-related hazards to drivers.
The company is working toward finding ways to provide early warnings to its satellite-enabled fleet.
“Our trucks generate many points of information,” according to the risk management executive. “RISKMASTER helps us match up that risk information with what’s happening in operations, and we can really make an impact on our company.”
The company is no longer seeing the growth in claims and expenses that it was experiencing before RISKMASTER. The reports to business unit managers are helping the company assess claims to improve safety and efficiency.
Driving Down Legal Costs
The company also uses CSC’s Legal Solutions Suite software, which integrates with RISKMASTER to help manage its relationship with outside counsel in the face of double-digit growth in legal costs.
Using Legal Solutions Suite, the firm introduced electronic invoicing and automated bill review processes to its outside counsel. With a central legal matter management system, the company can respond more quickly and efficiently to requests for information and improve overall collaboration with outside attorneys.
“We’ll know exactly where we are on any claim at any point in time just by going to one centralized database for that information,” the risk management executive said.
