Mentor-Protégé Program
CSC has participated in mentor-protégé programs since 1995, nurturing disadvantaged businesses and increasing supplier diversity initiatives.
History and Purpose of Mentor-Protégé Programs
The Mentor-Protégé Program was established in 1990 by the Department of Defense and implemented under the direction of former Senator Sam Nunn and former Secretary of Defense William Perry as a pilot program. The program provided incentives for major DoD prime contractors (mentors) to help small, disadvantaged businesses (protégés) compete more successfully for contract awards. In October 2000, an executive order extended the mentoring program to all federal departments and agencies.
Mentor-Protégé Program goals are:
- Extend technical and business assistance to small disadvantaged businesses (SDB), woman-owned small businesses (WOSB), historically black colleges and universities (HBCU), and minority educational institutions (MEI)
- Enhance the ability of these businesses and institutions to perform as subcontractors on federal projects
- Enable these businesses and institutions to serve as prime contractors and widen their reach into the industrial economy
CSC as a Mentor
Through our Mentor-Protégé Program, CSC has enhanced the ability of protégé companies to compete for government contracts, and expanded our efforts to identify and respond to their developmental needs.
Among the ways we've helped our protégé companies are:
- Upgrading accounting systems to allow a protégé to undertake larger projects
- Offering training in skill sets that will broaden a protégé's niche in the marketplace
- Redesigning benefits packages and improving HR management

Four Nunn-Perry Awards
The Nunn-Perry Award was established in 1995 to recognize a Mentor-Protégé team's outstanding performance. CSC participated in teams that received this award in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2009.

Potential Protégés — How to Qualify
A subcontracting relationship of at least two years with CSC is a primary consideration for participation in the CSC Mentor-Protégé Program. In addition, we require:
- Either
- Certification by the Small Business Administration as a Small Disadvantaged Business
- Self-certification as a woman-owned small business or service disabled veteran-owned business
- Willingness to sign a nondisclosure statement allowing CSC to assess the protégé's business
