Computers become EPEAT-registered through assessments against 23 required and 28 optional criteria. All registered products must meet all required criteria. Application of the optional criteria results in a three-tiered classification scheme in which products receive Bronze, Silver or Gold registration. As of April 15, 2008, 559 products were registered.
Criteria cover eight categories:
- Reduction/Elimination of Environmentally Sensitive Materials
- Energy Conservation
- Materials Selection
- End of Life Management
- Design for End of Life
- Corporate Performance
- Life Cycle Extension
- Packaging
EPEAT presently encompasses desktops, laptops and monitors (with 24 participating manufacturers) – and will be expanded to include imaging products, TVs, servers and handhelds. Federal agencies (e.g., EPA, Energy, DHS, NASA, Army) have been voluntarily applying EPEAT-defined green standards in the acquisition of $41B worth of products.
