CSC - PORTON JOINT VENTURE WINS $11 MILLION AWARD TO EXPEDITE PRODUCTION OF BOTULINUM VACCINE
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., September 4, 2003 – Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE: CSC) announced today that DynPort Vaccine Company LLC (DVC), a joint venture between CSC and Porton International Inc., has been awarded an $11 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a component of the National Institutes of Health, for fast-track development of a heptavalent botulinum vaccine. Under this award, DVC plans to develop the manufacturing processes for a safe and efficacious vaccine that will protect against all known forms of botulinum neurotoxins within five years. These processes would then be available for transition into pilot lot manufacture of the vaccine prior to Phase I clinical testing.
“Botulinum neurotoxin is generally recognized as the deadliest naturally occurring substance known and has been identified as a potential bioweapon,” said DVC President Terry Irgens. “There is an urgent need for a safe, efficacious vaccine that will protect against all seven known serotypes of the neurotoxin.”
The NIAID award funds development of two botulinum vaccines. Within two years, DVC will expedite the manufacturing process development of a pentavalent vaccine designed to provide immunologic protection against botulinum neurotoxin serotypes A, B, C, E and F. Within five years, the company will also develop the manufacturing processes for a heptavalent vaccine that will include antigens designed to protect against botulinum neurotoxin serotypes D and G.
DVC Principal Investigator Ian Henderson, Ph.D., will lead the research efforts in the project. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, Neb.; the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver, Colo.; HTD Biosystems Inc., Hercules, Calif.; and the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), Fort Detrick, Md., will team with DVC to provide research and manufacturing process development capabilities. USAMRIID owns the intellectual property for the vaccine to be produced and has filed patent applications.
NIAID is a component of the National Institutes of Health. NIAID conducts and supports research that strives to understand, treat and ultimately prevent the myriad infectious, immunologic and allergic diseases that threaten hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Since the fall of 2001, NIAID has greatly accelerated its biodefense research program, launching over 30 new research and construction initiatives. It has created a comprehensive strategic plan and a detailed research agenda for "Category A" agents of bioterrorism -- those considered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be the worst bioterror threats. These agents include smallpox, anthrax, the plague, botulism and the viral hemorrhagic fevers or "bleeding" fevers such as Ebola.
DVC is a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the development and licensure of safe and efficacious biodefense vaccines. Founded in 1997, DVC employs 135 professionals at its headquarters in Frederick, Md. For more information about DVC, visit the company’s Web site at www.dynport.com.
