CSC PRIME ALLIANCE RECEIVES OFFICIAL RECOGNITION FOR SOFTWARE ACQUISITION PROCESS EXCELLENCE IN SUPPORT OF IRS MODERNIZATION

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Sept. 5 -- Computer Sciences Corporation's (NYSE: CSC) PRIME Alliance has become the first organization in the world to be successfully evaluated against Level 3 of the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI) Software Acquisition Capability Maturity Model. The model was developed to help improve the software acquisition process so that organizations are better able to achieve acquisition goals.

Achieving the SA CMM Level 3 rating means that the CSC PRIME Alliance uses standardized, disciplined management processes in several critical process areas throughout the enterprise life cycle as it modernizes the American tax system in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service. These key process areas include training programs, acquisition risk management, contract performance management, project performance management, and process definition and maintenance. This model was first published in December of 1996 to aid government agencies in managing information technology contractors more effectively.

"The SA CMM Level 3 rating is a historic achievement for the IRS Modernization Program," said Fred Forman, Associate Commissioner of IRS Business Systems Modernization. "It underscores the importance the IRS has placed upon having the best possible program management to accomplish the modernization of the IRS's systems and business processes."

According to Stephen Kalish, president of CSC's Civil Group, "This accomplishment demonstrates that the CSC PRIME Alliance is uniquely qualified to manage and deliver business solution technology projects with the highest potential for success. This distinction is especially noteworthy since it was achieved in partnership with the IRS on a modernization effort of unprecedented scope."

The Software Engineering Institute is a federally funded research and development center which provides leadership in advancing the state of the practice of software acquisition and software engineering to improve the quality of systems that depend on software. The SEI helps organizations to improve their software acquisition and engineering management practices in maturing their people, process and technology assets to improve long-term business performance, and evaluates the progress of organizations in putting these management improvements into effect.

The IRS Modernization Program is a partnership between the IRS and the CSC PRIME Alliance that has created a blueprint clearly defining how business operations will be improved and how the IRS will take advantage of technology to provide better service to the public.
