CSC ADVANCES BPO OPERATIONS WITH DESKTOP VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY BUILT ON SUN RAY THIN CLIENTS
News Release -- February 04, 2009
New Solution Also Available for Implementation at Client Sites
FALLS CHURCH, Va., Feb. 4 – CSC (NYSE: CSC) today announced the successful deployment of a Sun Microsystems Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) desktop virtualization solution based on Sun Ray™ thin clients at three CSC financial services business process outsourcing (BPO) locations. The installation is part of a broader CSC initiative to enhance data security, reduce costs and save energy. Customers can benefit by having CSC administer their insurance business on a BPO basis or implement the solution at their sites.
CSC deployed Sun Ray thin clients, Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Software, Sun Secure Global Desktop Software and Sun servers in its Jacksonville, Ill., Nashville, Tenn., and Irving, Texas, BPO operations. In 2009, CSC intends to replace more than 2,500 desktop computers at 17 U.S. operations serving clients in life and annuity insurance, property and casualty insurance and banking. CSC’s BPO services support more than 100 financial services organizations worldwide from multiple BPO centers on three continents.
“CSC’s investment in technological advancements such as the Sun Ray devices is one of the reasons we have relied on CSC for business process outsourcing for so many years,” said Bonnie Wasgatt, senior vice president, Swiss Re. “We commend these steps to create a more flexible, secure, cost-effective and green environment for employees entrusted with serving our clients.”
The Sun Ray-based solution enables financial services clients to realize the benefits of a virtualized environment. It allows administrators to host and centrally manage virtual desktop machines on servers in the data center, while giving end users a full desktop computer experience from a thin-client device that consumes only about four watts of energy. It increases workplace flexibility by enabling employees to access their desktop and work from virtually anywhere, anytime, from their homes or offices around the world. In addition, it enhances security because none of the clients’ operational data or software applications are transmitted to or stored outside the data center on service center desktops.
“Our outsourcing services are backed by more than 5,000 insurance and banking experts, function-rich software and industry-leading technology,” said Jim Cook, president of CSC’s Financial Services Sector. “Deploying Sun Ray thin clients is one of CSC’s infrastructure and application modernization initiatives to better serve our growing community of financial services BPO clients.”
“Companies are increasingly looking to desktop virtualization to increase cost and energy savings,” said Joe Heel, senior vice president, Industries, Partners and Operations, Sun Microsystems. “These benefits and more are being realized in the three CSC BPO centers, and we’re enthusiastic about extending them to the marketplace. We look forward to continuing to work with CSC to deliver new solutions like this that solve clients’ most pressing business needs.”
