CSC LICENSES POWER MHS SYSTEM TO INDEPENDENT HEALTH
El Segundo, Calif., Sept. 3- Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE:CSC) has licensed its POWERMHS Managed Healthcare Information System to Independent Health, a not- for-profit HMO headquartered in Buffalo, New York. The contract, valued at nearly $7.3 million, will be maintained by CSC's Healthcare Group, which developed, maintains and distributes the POWERMHS System.
POWERMHS is a fully integrated, intelligent data processing and management information system for companies involved in managed care. Since its first installation in 1989, the POWERMHS system has been selected by over 60 healthcare organizations. The IBM AS/400 platform with its DB2 database makes POWERMHS a natural choice for traditional fee-for-service health insurance plans, integrated delivery systems, HMOs, PPOs and many other managed care models.
CSC will also provide Independent Health with licensure of its Focal Point Decision Support and Data Warehousing System and integration services.
"The long-term success of our organization is dependent upon our ability to use information to work collaboratively with our physician partners to improve the delivery of healthcare services to our members," said Bob Hoover, Independent Health's chief information officer. "The healthcare environment is rapidly changing and growing, and we needed a system with the flexibility to support new product offerings and accommodate long-term, visionary changes. CSC's POWERMHS and Focal Point Data Warehouse systems provide Independent Health with the foundation to achieve this goal."
Independent Health began operations in 1980. In addition to the original HMO, the company has expanded its managed care offerings to include a point-of-service product and coverage for self-funded employers, as well as Medicare and Medicaid managed care plans. The company also operates an HMO in the Metro-New York and Hudson Valley areas, for a combined statewide membership of more than 460,000.
