Future City® Competition Highlights STEM Education
Albany, NY, Jan. 6, 2015 -- CSC, a global leader in next-generation IT services and solutions, today announced its investment in area middle school students who are taking part in the Capital District Future City® Competition to highlight educational opportunities and careers in the rising science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. At the regional competition, which will take place Jan. 10 at Proctors Theater, Schenectady, CSC will present an award for the Best Computer-Designed City.
“I cannot stress enough how important it is for our state to prepare more New Yorkers for the high-skill jobs that will be needed in the workforce of tomorrow,” said Tom Silvious, director of the Civil and Health Services group at the systems integration firm. “Investing today in educational opportunities for middle school students in STEM will have a powerful and long-lasting positive impact on our economy.”
According to organizers, Capital District Future City® Competition provides a fun and exciting educational engineering program for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students by combining a stimulating engineering challenge with a “hands-on” application to present their vision of a city of the future. Students have four phases of a project to complete: designing, building, writing and presenting a city of the future.
“The competition is an exceptional way to engage students early,” said Silvious. “And the new SimCityTM software students are using to animate their future city will enable them to deliver unprecedented depth of simulation. In other words, the model-like world and detail of the computer animation will capture the audience and bring the city to life. I look forward to see what the students have created.”
