Easier for aid to reach Nargis victims

PETALING JAYA: Myanmar has made it easier for foreign aid to reach Cyclone Nargis victims, says Mercy Malaysia general manager Mona Hanim Sheikh Mahmud.

She said Myanmar had taken a more holistic approach to accepting help now compared with red tape imposed just after the cyclone occurred on May 2.

Mona Hanim praised Mercy Malaysia’s corporate partners who gave donations for the cyclone and the Sichuan earthquake victims despite the current economic situation.

“We are working hard on the two projects and we are planning to spend at least another one to two years to help rebuild their lives,” she told a press conference after accepting a donation of RM80,952 from Computer Systems Advisers (M) Sdn Bhd (CSAM) yesterday.

The funds were raised by employees in all 23 CSAM branches nationwide as part of a month-long corporate social responsibility programme.

Mona Hanim said people could still send aid for the China and Myanmar victims. Those interested in donating can visit www.mercy.org.my.
