Sabah Electricity Powers Forward
Client: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB)
Challenge: SESB needed to undergo a SAP server rationalisation and storage consolidation exercise to fulfill the demands of its consumers. The migration of applications and databases to the new server and storage was the main challenge.
Solution: The server rationalisation and storage consolidation project involved the installation of new SUN F4900 and Sun V240 servers to replace the existing Sun E10K and Sun E5500 servers, as well as the addition of a new SAN storage system.
Results: SESB has been able to reduce operation costs and increase efficiency in data storage and retrieval, while achieving faster processing speeds. With the increased storage and performance capacity, SESB can now carry out archiving and other system housekeeping activities with more efficiency.

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) is responsible for providing electricity supply to all of Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan. With 67 power stations under its care, it was imperative that operations were upgraded to meet with the growing electricity demand in East Malaysia.
As Sabah’s and Labuan’s sole supplier of electricity, SESB has been moving aggressively to meet the forecasted growing demand for electricity of about 7.7 percent per annum up to the year 2010. Among its plans to fulfill the demands of its consumers was to undergo a SAP server rationalisation and storage consolidation exercise.
Providing the Solutions
In 2006, CSA was awarded the contract to implement the server rationalisation and storage consolidation project based on its vast experience and proven expertise in implementing such complex projects.
The contract which was worth RM3 million, involved the installation of new SUN F4900 and Sun V240 servers to replace the existing Sun E10K and Sun E5500 servers, as well as the addition of a new SAN storage system. A critical aspect of the project was the migration of applications and databases to the new server and storage, which were implemented successfully at the end of February this year with the strong collaboration between Sun Microsystems, SAP and CSA.
Delivering the Results
“This is one investment where we get immediate benefit from all angles of computer operations; faster processing speed, efficiency in storage management and low cost of maintenance services without compromising quality,” enthused Puan Rokiah binti Abdul, Chief Information Officer, SESB. Sufficient storage capacity was crucial for SESB to carry out archiving and other system housekeeping activities, without experiencing frequent down times, slow response times and inefficient data processing.
The results of the server rationalisation and storage consolidation project have been resoundingly positive. SESB has been able to reduce operation costs and increase efficiency in data storage and retrieval, while achieving faster processing speeds with the increased storage and performance capacity. SESB expects to see operating savings of up to 31 percent within the next 5 years, from the cost it would otherwise have to pay for the maintenance of the old system. Additionally, the yearly maintenance costs will be reduced by 50 percent.
Serving Our Customers
The project was designed to meet the storage and usage needs for SESB for the next 5 years, and will go far in helping SESB to reach its objectives in meeting the growing electricity demand. “SESB has been our customer for a good number of years and I am pleased to see CSA working in close partnership with SESB for this project. It is heartening to know that SESB maintains its confidence in CSA’s capabilities and commitment to the project and we certainly hope to be of service for many more years to come. The team is proud to be involved in helping SESB succeed as the leading electricity provider for Sabah and Labuan,” said Chuah Tai Eu, Managing Director, CSA.
