CSC SYSTEM HELPS NEW YORK LIFE ACHIEVE CELENT’S ‘MODEL CARRIER COMPONENT’ RECOGNITION
VP/MS Software Reduces Product Introduction Time
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., April 9 – Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE: CSC) today announced that Celent, a leading research and advisory firm focused on insurance technology strategy, has recognized a CSC client, New York Life Insurance Company, as having a “model carrier component” in the area of product design technology. The report, “Celent Model Carrier 2007: Case Studies in Effective Use of Technology in Insurance,” spotlights New York Life’s insurance product design and development.
New York Life integrated CSC’s Visual Product Modeling System (VP/MS) with its policy administration and illustration systems, enabling the company to cut the time it needs to introduce new products by as much as two months.
“The approach Celent took in this report was to document a broad range of best practices that a ‘model carrier’ would use by pulling together examples from dozens of different insurers across the globe,” said Matthew Josefowicz, managing director of Celent’s insurance practice and lead author of the report. “The story of how CSC’s VP/MS helped New York Life improve its product lifecycle is a real-world example of the effective usage of technology.”
VP/MS is a business rule and calculation engine that reduces the need for software programming, placing insurance product definition and creation in the hands of business experts to speed product ideas from concept to market. Using VP/MS, product designers, actuaries and marketing personnel can collaborate to define the actuarial formulas and table-based rules on which insurance products are based. The same VP/MS product definitions are then available to all systems that support the product – from sales through policy administration and reporting — regardless of technical platform.
“Using technology to improve performance and meet market demands is our standard operating procedure,” said Lindsay Shadbolt, New York Life Corporate vice president. “In addition to ensuring consistency in product development, VP/MS helps us trim new product introduction times by eliminating the duplicate programming of actuarial formulas and reducing the amount of time for customer acceptance testing.”
“We salute New York Life as an example of a carrier using technology in highly strategic ways,” said Michael W. Risley, president of the Life and Annuity division of CSC’s Financial Services Group. “VP/MS can transform not only how carriers design new products, but the products themselves, and is helping industry leaders like New York Life achieve significant business results.”
