When Farmers Mutual Hail (FMH) learned that its mainframe-based reinsurance administration system would no longer be supported by its developer, the company began to search for a replacement. FMH wanted a system that offered improved information for reporting and increased speed in obtaining that information. FMH also wanted a system that would manage its facultative insurance book, which was being managed through a combination of its administration system and Microsoft Access.

More Information, Better Reporting
FMH considered several potential systems but chose CSC’s SICS/nt because of its data storage capability, its platform which allows for easy integration with other applications, and its rich reporting functions.

“We can have more information at our fingertips all the time,” says Candy Crooks, Treaty Underwriter. “And not only does the system hold more data but it provides you with user-defined field options to capture any additional data desired and customize the system to fit your needs. It provides us with more available access to our book of business and the opportunity to manage it more efficiently.”

Remote Access — An Added Bonus
A major unplanned benefit to FMH is the remote access capability. Previously the company’s reinsurance representatives and underwriters had to carry with them all the business information they needed in hard copy reports — sometimes while traveling hundreds of miles across rural America. Now all they need do is access the system via the Internet and download current data to a laptop within minutes.

Increased Flexibility and Efficiency
“The new system is providing us with many ways to make our every day processes more efficient,” said Crooks. “We plan to automate more and obviously that means we can reduce manual effort and increase productivity.”
