News Alert: CSC Implements Solution for Referrals at St Jansdal Hospital
News Release -- July 03, 2012
Solution based on legal regulations reduces administrative workload and provides MDs with referral information in EPR LEIDEN, THE NETHERLANDS, July 3, 2013 – CSC (NYSE: CSC) today announced that the St Jansdal Hospital in Harderwijk, the Netherlands, has gone live with its solution for Transmural Patient Management. This solution enables St Jansdal to fully automatically handle electronic referral letters sent by GPs from the area through ZorgDomein, the GP web portal for referring patients to hospitals. This makes it possible for the hospital to optimize efficiency in patient registration, scheduling of appointments and consultation preparation.
CSC’s Transmural Patient Management (TPM) allows hospitals to reduce the administrative workload created for hospitals by the growing number of transmural electronic messages, such as those sent by ZorgDomein. The TPM solution enables fully automated verification of patient details, registration of patients, and storage of referral letters in the Electronic Patient Record (EPR), and streamlines appointment scheduling.
In every-day practice, this means that the appointment details are already available in the scheduling system for confirmation and that the physician can already look into the referral letter in the EPR prior to the actual consultation. It also means that at the patient’s arrival in the hospital the only action required is the verification of the patient’s identity.
“Exactly how much time we are going to gain, is going to become clear now that we have gone into production. In any case, this solution provides us with significant advantages in three areas,” says Wytske Hummel, Head of the Appointment Desk at St Jansdal Hospital. “To start with when we register appointments by phone, as we will no longer need to ask patients for all of their details, since the patient and referral data will already be available. Next, with the referral letters, which will no longer need to be printed and scanned by administrative staff. And for the MDs this also means an important step forward, as they will have access to the GP’s referral letter in the patient’s EPR well in advance. The main advantage is that everything will have been checked behind the scenes, so to speak. We will be able to remove a lot of manual tasks from the process, such as re-entering data, and printing and scanning referral letters.”
“Over the past period of time, we have processed around 10,000 referral letters to test automatic handling and to ensure sufficient checks,” says Mark Sigterman, Project Manager at CSC. “As for the patient registration, our solution of course complies with the legal regulations for patient privacy. Patients who have not been registered yet in the HIS, are registered using the BSN number (Citizen Service Number) provided by the GP, who is a trusted source of information within the legal framework. TPM also checks the details of the patient’s health insurance through the VECOZO service. This check and the registration itself no longer need to be performed manually by administration staff. This saves a huge amount of time. During the latest test rounds we found that around 97% of referral letters can be handled entirely automatically.”
CSC’s TPM therefore provides a solution that enables the reduction of administrative workload, gives MDs more time to prepare for their consultations, and that provides patients with even better and faster service.
