Summary of Key Provisions in Proposed Rule for Stage 2 of Meaningful Use

The requirements to achieve incentives for Stage 2 of meaningful use were released by CMS on February 23, 2012. Almost every measure contains some changes—some major. The requirement for CPOE now includes laboratory and radiology orders and the bar has been raised to 60% of all orders. Patients must be able to view, download and transfer their health information and 10% must have used this capability. In addition, there are new requirements including electronic checking before administering medications, ability to view images, secure email with patients and electronic transfer of information when patients move from one setting of are to another.
