As reimbursement transitions from rewarding volume to rewarding performance, healthcare reform is defining the performance expectations for the future at the same time that the HITECH EHR incentive program is available to help build the IT foundation for that future. The challenge is to be sure that today’s work on HITECH is aligned with the future requirements. Specific strategies are needed to achieve meaningful use, but also ensure that every step taken is a step toward what will be needed in the future.
