Cloud computing is a new computing model that lets organizations pay for only the resources they need, when they are needed. With cloud computing, shared resources are allocated dynamically to create a highly flexible environment. This enables organizations to treat infrastructure as a service, rather than an expensive capital expenditure. In this paper, CSC describes the various types of cloud computing and examines five “promises” that are often heard in the marketplace today. The authors also describe four key steps that healthcare organizations can take to make the most of what the cloud has to offer. They include: 1) Understand your options and the related risks; 2) Establish a strategy for using the cloud; 3) Integrate your cloud strategy into future capital expenditures; and 4) Build comfort with the cloud model by starting with quick victories.
