U.S. Healthcare Workforce Shortages: Caregivers
Author:
Walt Zywiak
A challenge facing the healthcare industry today and in the near future is growing workforce shortages. A product of both industry growth and demands for reform, one example is the growing shortage of caregivers that threatens to reduce care access available to current, new and patients residing in underserved areas and neighborhoods.
This paper describes the caregiver shortage, its sources and causes, and what is being done and must be done to address them – including efforts from within the industry and as legislated by both the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
