A growing trend at U.S. hospitals and health care systems preparing for health reform and other industry change anticipated during the next 5 years is initiating use of integrated electronic health records (EHRs) within their hospital and physician practice communities. These communities need integrated EHRs to meet HITECH Act meaningful use criteria, coordinate care of patients who cross care venues, streamline hospital-practice workflows and address health reform initiatives.
This paper discusses how hospitals at the leading edge of the trend are initiating EHR adoption and integration, challenges they face, and options for meeting the challenges. It focuses on the following key issues:
• Practice EHR options • EHR integration (connection) options • Practice assistance • Other available resources
