Update on Certification: The Final Rule

Author:

Erica Drazen

Summary:

In order to receive Medicare and Medicaid incentive payments for Meaningful Use of an EHR, hospitals and physician practices must be using a "certified" EHR product.  The criteria for certification directly support the requirements for Meaningful Use, interoperability, and privacy and security.  The temporary certification program is well underway.   The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Care IT has also issued the final requirements for a permanent certification program that starts in January of 2012.
