Update on Certification
Author:
Jason Fortin and Erica DrazenSummary:
In order to receive Medicare and Medicaid incentive payments for Meaningful Use of an EHR starting in 2011, hospitals and physician practices must have a "certified" EHR product. The criteria for certification will focus on the high level capabilities that directly support the requirements for Meaningful Use, interoperability, and privacy and security. The office of the National Coordinator for Healthcare IT (ONC) will take responsibility for developing the certification criteria and for designing the process for accrediting certifying organizations. An interim certification process will be in place by October of 2009.
