The Leapfrog Group is recognized for their efforts in promoting safe, quality, affordable health care. They identified CPOE as one of the first three major "leaps" for achieving improvements in patient safety in the hospital.
To define further what they meant and how they would measure the meaningful adoption of CPOE for the purpose of improving medication safety, the group developed a standard that addresses both the degree of adoption (use) and the aggressive use of the CDS toolset. Built by a team from CSC and a group of expert advisers, the tool is designed to enable a team in each hospital to assess the ability of the implemented CPOE system to detect common and serious prescribing errors and provide some form of advice to the ordering physician. Northwestern Memorial Hospital participated in the original CPOE Evaluation pilot in 2006. When the CPOE Evaluation tool became available in 2008, Northwestern elected to participate again in order to evaluate their progress in enhancing the clinical decision support capabilities.
