Summary:

A critical element of a more effective and less costly health system is the requirement for patients and their families to take a more aggressive role in both preventing and managing disease. Patient self-care is especially vital since the current challenge of care provider and hospital bed shortages will worsen as the population continues to age. Technology will play a key role in the next generation of patient self-care, both in supporting care-related tasks and in allowing providers to monitor and communicate with patients without requiring face-to-face or telephone interaction.
