Taking Advantage of Stimulus Dollars: CSC's Point of View
Author:
Erica DrazenSummary:
Hospitals and eligible providers who are not hospital-based are eligible for incentive payments from Medicare and Medicaid if they demonstrate "Meaningful Use" of Certified EHR technology. This funding was authorized by the stimulus bill (sometimes referred to as ARRA - the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act). The incentives are time-limited and by qualifying early, providers will get the maximum payments.
The proposed requirements for qualifying for meaningful use incentives were released by CMS on December 30th, additional requirements for privacy and security have already been announced, and standards required for certification will be effective on March 13, 2010. The incentive payments are attractive, but there are also penalties for those that don't qualify as meaningful users by 2015. Organizations need to start now to assess gaps and begin to close them.
