Mandatory Medicare Secondary Payer Reporting

New rules from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) make Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP) status reporting mandatory in 2009 - placing new data and administrative requirements on a wide variety of group health plans. The reporting requirements, accompanied by significant financial penalties to promote compliance, are expected to save the Medicare program millions of dollars annually by increasing the number of cases in which another carrier is the primary coverage for a Medicare beneficiary. Group health plans must act quickly to meet implementation timelines and to assess and remediate information gaps and data quality issues that would impede compliance.
