Adoption of Electronic Health Record Capabilities in Massachusetts Physician Practices
Author:
Jason Fortin and Erica DrazenSummary:
This paper examines the results of a 2008 Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts survey looking at the use of electronic health record (EHR) capabilities by Massachusetts physicians. More than one-third of physicians surveyed said that they use all “basic” EHR capabilities, including electronic medication and problem lists, and functionality to order prescriptions electronically – roughly twice the national average. Use of all “advanced” EHR capabilities, including the ability to transmit prescriptions electronically to a pharmacy, as well as disease management and health maintenance functionality, was reported by 5 percent of respondents. The survey of 519 Massachusetts physicians was conducted in the summer of 2008.
