Nursing staff are the backbone of healthcare delivery, and are at the center of communications between patients, care giving staff and auxiliary services. This multifaceted role often pulls nurses in several different directions, carrying them away from providing direct care to patients. Indeed, according to a recent study, the average nurse spends only 31 percent of his or her time on direct patient care. For the California HealthCare Foundation, Fran Turisco and Jared Rhoads of CSC's Healthcare Sector prepared a recently released report titled, "Equipped for Efficiency: Improving Nursing Care through Technology." Based on interviews with nurses and other professionals who have implemented eight new technologies to create a better working environment, the report reviews how these changed the work environment to improve efficiency, safety and quality.
