Next Generation Inpatient Care

Hospitals will need to make major changes in their focus, their operations and their partnerships to create the next generation of inpatient care. One major challenge will be "Crossing the Capacity Chasm"; the growing gap between the demand for care and the capacity of the hospitals to meet that need. There will be shortages of physicians and nurses, as well as beds, and managing patient flow through the facility will become critical.

Hospital executives will need to be leaders in organizing the care delivery community to keep people out of the hospital by providing other care delivery options and keeping the population healthy. Employers, who pay for a large amount of care, have an incentive to partner in promoting wellness. Several hospitals have developed solutions to meet these future challenges and there is a growing body of knowledge for others to follow.
