Treatment Plan: Hospitals Respond to the Economic Crisis

A survey of 54 hospital executives shows that 74 percent have already taken action to respond to the financial crisis and 20 percent more have developed plans to do so. Hospitals have cancelled, delayed or deferred hospital construction projects and hospital IT projects, and they anticipate admissions for elective surgery will decline, while ED visits by uninsured patients will increase. Three quarters of the respondents are implementing cost cutting projects and over 40 percent expect to lay off staff. However, cuts are being made selectively and projects to improve patient safety and implement EMR systems are proceeding.
