What’s Next After Advanced Clinical Information Systems?

The current focus of clinical Information Technology (IT) in the hospital is advanced clinical applications, including nursing and physician documentation, electronic medication administration record (eMAR), and computerized physician order entry (CPOE) to incorporate the advantages of the computer into all of the routine tasks of the physicians, nurses, and others who care for hospitalized patients. When implemented as part of new streamlined care processes, these applications provide the information system foundation for much more reliable, efficient, and effective care.
