News Release-- December 08, 2003
NORWICH UNION SIGNS GLOBAL 10-YEAR EXTENSION OF CSC INSURANCE SOFTWARE
Aldershot, UK, 8th December 2003: Norwich Union Insurance (NUI), the UK general insurance arm of the world's seventh largest insurance group, Aviva, and Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE:CSC), a leading global information technology (IT) services company, announced today that Norwich Union has lengthened its relationship with CSC by signing a 10-year extension to its global software licensing contract for Exceed, CSC’s comprehensive software for the general insurance industry. To date, CSC has been supplying solutions and services to Norwich Union since 1988, making the relationship between the two companies one of the longest and most successful in the business.
Norwich Union helped CSC develop Exceed along with three U.S. insurance carriers. Today, Norwich Union, the UK’s largest general insurer, processes two million policies on the system. Exceed integrates all areas of the insurance enterprise, including policy administration, underwriting, billing, claims, commissions, work management, documents, image archiving and business intelligence.
Exceed allows users to underwrite and administer policies via an Internet browser or Web services. As a result, Norwich Union has been able to extend vital capabilities to its brokers and corporate partners who, for instance, can now obtain quotes and process policies on-line. These capabilities have been strongly endorsed by the broker community and 1,000 leading insurance brokers are already accessing the system via the Internet.
“We are now able to set up and issue a policy in a matter of minutes, providing our clients with very responsive service,” said Andy Reid, director of broking firm FHI, one of the early users of the system. “And, since much of our business is mortgage-driven, we’re able to confirm clients’ home policies with their solicitors and lenders almost instantaneously, speeding the release of funds.”
“In our 15 year relationship with CSC, we have contributed to the development of several generations of software,” said Alex Robinson, information technology director of Norwich Union Insurance. “The Exceed platform is the best solution yet, and an important part of our programme of systems rationalisation, helping us reduce costs and drive complexity out of our business.”
“CSC’s relationship with insurers like NUI shows just what can be achieved through collaboration,” said John Maitz, CSC vice president and head of the General Insurance Division for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “It helps ensure that the software we create meets our clients’ expectation in advanced insurance solutions, expectations such as increased operational efficiency and reduced overall IT maintenance costs.”
Exceed’s Web-based browser screens extend mainframe performance to multiple distribution channels such as call centres, the Internet and mobile devices. Without programming, users can configure screens to provide varying views of the system based on security levels and workflows. Exceed's architecture uses industry standard XML messaging to isolate technology within processing layers, allowing users to quickly make changes to the software without changing the underlying code. Exceed also complies with CSC e4, the company's enterprise integration architecture that unifies application software components, new business process management systems and workflow tools within a single environment.
