CSC Chairman’s Award Honors Extraordinary Feats
Five CSC_ teams behind ground-breaking achievements in the transportation, entertainment, managed hosting, supply chain and natural resources industries are all recipients of the 2008 CSC Chairman’s Award for Excellence, formerly known as the CSC Award for Technical Excellence.
The award is the most prestigious honor for CSC employees. It is given each year to recognize people who deliver solutions and services that encompass the highest levels of innovation and value to customers in CSC’s numerous industries.
"Excellence and innovation are the foundation of CSC’s success in providing business value in every industry to our clients," says Michael W. Laphen, CSC chairman, president and CEO. "The CSC Chairman’s Award for Excellence is a tribute to the talent, skills and ingenuity of our professionals — the people who create extraordinary business solutions for our clients worldwide."
The five recipient teams and 10 finalist teams were chosen from a field of 146 entries. The rigorous selection process spanned several months, with input from more than 100 subject matter experts and executive level reviewers from CSC worldwide.
CSC congratulates the following recipients:
Surfing the Web on high-speed trains
Passengers on board Thalys International high-speed trains traveling through Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands now have low-cost Internet access using Wi-Fi and satellite technologies. Less than one year after being selected by Thalys, CSC initiated, designed and monitored a complete integrated system approach, culminating in a public launch of the new Internet on Board Service — the first of its kind on a European commercial passenger rail service.

Selling more tickets faster
Billetel — the IT subsidiary of Fnac, France’s largest entertainment ticketing company — turned to CSC to overhaul its outdated online ticket reservation system with a flexible, technologically advanced management application. Based on an open source software platform, tickets are now sold to more than 6,000 sports, cultural and entertainment events daily, representing nearly 50,000 individual performances each year.
With a centralized booking system, providing real-time management of all in-store, telephone and Internet ticket purchases, Billetel makes seats available immediately through any sales point, regardless of payment method. Available 24x7, the system sells 12 million tickets every year to more than three million customers. The CSC team included Emmanuel Lecomte, David Massou, Vie^t-Hung Alain Nguyen and Joe"lle Sikorav.

Staying connected any time, any place
CSC developed a highly reliable mobile framework for an Australian steel manufacturer that cost-effectively runs on any mobile device, from any location, while remaining impervious to a harsh industrial environment. CSC’s Wireless Product Identification (WPI) system, a supply chain management solution, provides real-time updates to customers and proof of delivery captured by Managed Logistics Operations.
WPI has now been implemented at all of the customer’s sites throughout Australia, operating on a 24x7 basis. The application has performed more than three million supply chain transactions over the wireless network without any data loss or service interruption. The CSC team included Paul Bergman, David Greer, Darren Hungerford and Michael Riedel.

Preventing accidents underground
Beset by incidents and accidents — including vehicle collisions and near-misses — in their Australian underground mine, BHP Billiton-owned Cannington turned to CSC’s Kobus Du Plessis to develop a solution architect design for an underground traffic management system. Using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology — the first time it has ever been operational underground — the system relays real-time vehicle type, position and direction to equipment operators so they know exactly when another vehicle is approaching.
Since the system was installed in February 2007, there have been no accidents or incidents. In addition to the invaluable safety improvements, production managers are able to keep track of underground equipment movement and performance, thereby improving productivity. And, now that equipment drivers are able to react early enough to avoid potential accidents, they are more confident driving in the underground mine.

Saving money and power with a flexible grid
The RDC Grid Team designed a unique, layered Grid Service architecture that is secure commercially and uses commodity servers, networking and operating system facilities to give excellent scalability and operational price/performance. Competitive on both price and delivery time against clients’ in-house grids, CSC’s RDC Grid solution is now a global service offering under CSC’s Results Driven Computing trademark.
Because of the Grid Service’s technical, security and commercial strengths, CSC has won more than $5 million worth of business with new clients, including UBS AG and Transport for London. Each RDC Grid is stateless — meaning there’s no possibility of unauthorized transfer of information between clients. The system allows for frequent secure switching of resources between clients to enable new usage within 20 minutes with new operating systems and applications tailored to the new client. This enables each client to see the grid as an extension of its own network, while enabling machine utilization to be increased as much as 90 percent. The CSC team included Nigel Healy, Ian McKay, John Rawlins and Paul White.
