This week, "Carrier" gave viewers an unprecedented look at life onboard the USS Nimitz supercarrier. CSC has a rich history of supporting the U.S. Navy, and is proud to be the corporate underwriter for the 10-part documentary series, now available online.

"This documentary deeply resonates with many of our customers and employees," says James W. Sheaffer, president of CSC’s North American Public Sector. "The U.S. Navy is an important client of ours, and many of our employees have proudly served in this branch of service and have similar connections and experiences to those who are profiled on the ’Carrier’ series."

"Carrier" episodes are available on the show’s Web site now. This marks the first time PBS has streamed an entire series online.

CSC’s rich history with U.S. Navy

CSC’s support for the U.S. Navy spans more than 40 years, with many of CSC’s business and technology leaders Navy veterans. Today, CSC provides a range of services to naval facilities and programs around the world:

Aegis Protects Fleet, Nation With Help of CSC Software

When the U.S. Navy contracted Lockheed Martin to build the world’s most sophisticated seaborne missile defense system, Lockheed Martin turned to CSC for the software needed to make it work. The resulting Aegis combat system has now protected U.S. and allied warships for a quarter century.

QA Program Boosts Aircraft Safety, Cuts Costs

A team of CSC technologists plays a key role in supporting a U.S. Navy quality assurance program that uses the data recorded on every flight to help improve safety, training and the fleet’s operational readiness.

USS Cole Returns to the Sea With Technical Help From CSC

The USS Cole destroyer rejoined the U.S. Navy’s Atlantic Fleet after a successful 14-month effort to repair damage from a terrorist attack. While the Cole was being repaired, CSC ship design experts conducted damage assessments and drafted recommendations that are now being used to help increase the survivability of U.S. Navy vessels.

Training at Atlantic Test Range Sharpens Warfare Prowess

At the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center, CSC supports training, testing and evaluation, as well as maintenance and support of all facilities, systems and a 600-person high-tech workforce.

CSC Scientists Help Midshipmen Build MidSTAR Satellite

CSC scientists, including former NASA astronaut Ron Parise, are working with students at the U.S. Naval Academy to develop a satellite designed to deliver small payloads at a relatively low cost.

"Carrier" offers intimate view

Filmed in 2005 during Iraq war operations, "Carrier" gives audiences an intimate view of life onboard a nuclear aircraft carrier. Nearly 2,000 hours of high-definition video were captured aboard the ship during a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf.

The USS Nimitz is the largest ship in its class of supercarriers, and is home to more than 5,000 sailors and Marines. "Carrier" explores the lives of these men and women — from the strike group admiral, to fighter pilots, to new sailors — as they navigate personal conflicts around their jobs, families, patriotism and war.
