Six Sigma Terminology

Green Belt: The first Six Sigma level — can play the role of team leader. The training lasts for five days.

Black Belt: The rank above Green Belt — can lead a project and guide a number of Green Belts. There are three training courses, each lasting a week. At the end of the training, a Six Sigma project is performed.

Master Black Belt: Qualified to teach other Six Sigma facilitators the methodologies, tools and applications in all functions and levels of the company. Master Black Belts are Six Sigma quality experts, responsible for the strategic implementations within an organization.

DMAIC: Define, measure, analyze, improve and control — the five phases of a Six Sigma project designed to improve an existing process.

DFSS: Design for Six Sigma — a method designed to complement DMAIC, used for the designing or redesigning of processes.

Lean/Six Sigma: A Six Sigma development that incorporates tools from "lean manufacturing." This has two main advantages — it speeds up a process and reduces waste.

Voice of the Customer: A Six Sigma approach that mandates that before carrying out any optimization work, the external and/or internal customer must be asked what he is hoping for.

Working Out: A problem-solving approach in the form of a workshop designed to generate and apply simple, shared solutions.
