CSC’s Global Security Solutions Organization Delivers End-to-End Protection

CSC has created a new organization that combines the company’s four decades of IT services experience with its wide range of security capabilities. Formally announced on April 7, 2004, the Global Security Solutions (GSS) organization offers an integrated portfolio of high-performance security solutions to both the U.S. federal market as well as global commercial clients.

Global Security SolutionsGSS leverages CSC’s commercial best practice and government experience to deliver end-to-end enterprise security services and protect mission-critical assets. CSC uses a holistic approach to security that relies on close collaboration with customers to provide the right level of services.

GSS offers all major elements of security, including information, personnel and physical security, and focuses on maximizing clients’ business results. The organization provides integrated offerings that merge CSC’s technical know-how with its expertise in proving world-class physical security services.

According to Chris Steinbach, CSC’s vice president, Global Security Solutions, "The creation of GSS allows CSC to deliver dramatically improved organizational security and peace of mind for our clients." Among the key services offered are risk management, security consulting, physical security system design and personnel background screening services.

An increased demand for security services

Information security has long been a critical market in the IT industry, and the events of
Sept. 11, 2001, resulted in an even greater demand for robust security services and a focus on business continuity. Both government and commercial entities have a greater need for secure environments, and CSC is well positioned to provide end-to-end solutions.

A number of factors have forced government and commercial enterprises to take measures to improve their security, including the constant threat of cyberattacks, stricter compliance guidelines and increased threats from internal sources. GSS addresses the need for total protection, from facilities and systems to people and information.

CSC’s track record in providing security services to key government entities is unparalleled in the industry. For one, CSC is a leader in providing security and intelligence services to U.S. federal agencies like the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice. CSC’s government experience dates back to 1961 and the company is among the top 10 suppliers of IT services to the federal government.

The Global Security Solutions unit is part of CSC’s Enforcement, Security and Intelligence (ESI) organization, which was established in 2002 to meet the U.S. government’s growing demand for security and intelligence services. While ESI focuses on the federal market, security offerings from GSS are also available to commercial clients across the globe, enabling clients to benefit from best-in-class services delivered to both markets.

Steinbach says GSS combines CSC’s experience providing security services to large-scale clients with the additional capabilities gained in the company’s March 2003 acquisition of DynCorp. "CSC has a very successful track record in terms of IT security—a long legacy on the federal side particularly. But in the last few years we’ve acquired a very solid reputation in information security on the commercial side with our major outsourcing accounts and pure managed security clients."

Securing bricks, borders, bits and business

The GSS organization uses a business-driven approach to providing information protection, physical security and personnel security.

CSC’s comprehensive security offerings cover a wide scope of services. Among the consulting and advisory services offered are security training, program and architecture design, compliance management and vulnerability assessments. Among the managed information security services are intrusion detection, managed authentication and remote access and wireless security.

Physical and personnel security consulting and advisory services include physical assessments, the integration of biometrics and RFID technologies, employee training and background investigations.

GSS is able to take advantage of CSC’s global presence, allowing CSC to deliver integrated solutions to multinational commercial accounts and government clients in other countries. CSC security experts support clients on five continents and CSC maintains state-of-the-art information security labs in the United States, Germany, Sweden and Australia.

CSC’s acquisition of DynCorp in 2003 bolstered an already strong security services portfolio. Steinbach says DynCorp’s experience in physical security, as well as its expertise in key areas such as background personnel screening, has helped to create an end-to-end security portfolio that is unmatched in the industry.

Providing security "return on investment" for clients

GSS maximizes return on investment for CSC clients by tailoring security services to meet exact business requirements. CSC’s vendor-independent approach to security also provides customers with maximum flexibility in making hardware and software decisions as well as access to industrial-strength best practices.

An example of a key offering that has both government and commercial applications is CSC’s Managed Authentication Service. This cross-platform service provides users with improved control of access to vital systems and information. The service also leverages advanced technologies such as biometrics to fit customers’ business requirements.

"With CSC, you can get all of your security needs met out of one organization that recognizes the tradeoffs between the cost to produce a trusted individual, the cost to produce a trusted IT environment and the cost to have a trusted facility," Steinbach says. "Physical, personnel and cyber security can no longer be viewed as individual silos. We’re seeing our clients and the market beginning to look at the relationship between these security domains to optimize the protection of critical organizational assets."
